This Daz to Unreal Bridge FAQ contains all kind of questions and problems that might come up while using the exporter. We will also explain many advanced tips. As you already know, there is a new Daz to Unreal Bridge tool available here. It helps to export and import Genesis models between the platforms. You can also read our full Daz to Unreal Bridge Tutorial that guides you through all the basics and the installation.

Which files are compatible with UE4 Bridge?

Unreal Engine has his own file format called .uasset and .umap if you want you can export those files here.

Before you buy an asset make sure it is compatible with Daz to Unreal plugin

Inside the shop page, you can filter by software. Select Daz To Unreal Bridge software.

"daz

You can double check if your file is compatible inside the model store page

"daz

Make sure your 3d model in DazStudio uses Genesis 3 or Genesis 8 before trying to import, Models like Victoria or Michael are not guaranteed to transfer to Unreal Engine using the bridge plugin. Some files may transfer but will have issues inside UE4.

"daz

I modified my Daz Character in Unreal Engine, how can I export it?

Yes, you can export your characters and assets by right clicking the asset>Asset Actions>Export inside UE4

"exporting

Select the location, Name it and save

"export

Can I manually import my character from Daz to UE4 without the bridge?

Yes, you can import manually any character from Daz by going to your Export folder once the export is done. Unreal does this by his own, but if you want to do it yourself, you can change the port number before the export

"daz

Once you are inside the folder, you will find a .dtu and a .fbx file.

"export

Now drag the fbx or .dtu to your UE4 content window and a import window will show up

Is better to import using .dtu, since that file creates all the folders and organize the asset

"unreal

If you don’t have any previous character or you want a completely new character, just click import but, if you have another character and you want to share animations with your previous character you have to activate the plugin and engine content folder down right side of the content window, once is done, select the skeleton of the character; In my case i used a Genesis3 Character.

"unreal

"fbx

Once it is imported, you may find every content the character has while imported as fbx.

"fbx

How can I render using my character in UE4?

You can take snapshots as well as videos, i will show you how to do both

Snapshot

Setup a new camera inside the level, Position it and setup the scenario

"new

"screen

Once your scene has been set, take a snap shot with F9 or go to Options>High Resolution Screenshot

"high

A new window will pop up telling you the location of the saved file

"high

"unreal

Video

Now i will teach you how to do a video, using the same scene I just did.

First we need to setup a Level Sequence

"add

A new window will pop up, move it wherever you want

"sequencer

Select the actor you want to animate, then go to Track>Actor To Sequencer>Select our camera actor, both ways will work, add it from selection or Level

"sequencer

Now I will add a simple animation for our character

"sequencer

Animation>Select the animation you want to play

"sequencer

Let’s do a camera animation, standing at frame 0, inside the transform>location click the + button to add a key animation. This will save our camera position it the current frame

"sequencer

Now standing on your final frame or the frame you want to create a key, move the location we just keyed, if it has a key previously created and we change that number it will create us a new key.

"sequencer

You can preview the animations by setting the viewport, go to viewport options and select the camera and Cinematic viewport option

"setting

Once is done, go to your sequence window and click the render option, setup your options and click capture movie

"sequencer

"sequencer

Can I use the Daz3d models for my commercial games in UE4?

Since some licenses are not added in the store you may assume these assets are not for commercial usage, the store before buying shows you a license for an extra charge of money that includes an Interactive License.

Otherwise you can send a ticket asking if the current asset you want to use is free of usage in commercial games in case it has no Interactive License buy option.

How can I work with Cloth in UE4?

You can set your cloth simulations in UE4 by going to your Skeletal_Mesh>Section Selection, select the mesh you want to apply the cloth simulation, right click>Create Clothing Data From Section

"create

Activate Cloth Paint and select your Clothing Data just created.

"activating

Setup your brush and start painting

100=White and 100% cloth influence

0=Black/Pink 0% Cloth influence

"cloth

Once you have finished, deactivate the Cloth Painting, Select the mesh, right click and apply clothing data then select the data we just created

"applying

After the data has been applied you can re-activate Cloth Painting to fix some issues

"cloth

You have to also modify the Physical Asset

"physics

Modify each capsule to fit his “bone”, when you have done this, the cloth will work way better

"bad

"physical

"cloth

I have animations from the UE4 marketplace, how can i retarget them to my Daz Character?

You can repeat the process mentioned in our “Daz to Unreal Bridge Tutorial’ – see the ThirdPerson Section for Skeleton setups

Select the animation you want to retarget, right click>Retarget Anim Assets>Duplicate Anim Asset And Retarget.

"animation

Select your target character skeleton and destination folder.

"retarget

"retargeted

Can I modify the texture of my Character in UE4?

Yes, you can change everything in your character material

Go to YourCharacter>Materials

"materials

I will change my Character’s Top Material and i will turn it red

"top

"my

Then i will modify the Vest of my top (MyCharacter_Top)

"my

I gave it 0 roughness and i lower the glossy and changed the color back to white

"top

That’s now my Character’s top is looking.

You can do this with each material inside your character’s content

"top

How can i pose my character in UE4?

Yes, of course you can.

Open your Character’s Skeleton Window

"character

Once you are there, you can set the visibility of each bone or just the selected one

"show

On the right window you can also see the entire skeleton tree of your model

"my

Select the bones and start doing your pose

"custom

You can also modify a DazStudio Pose if you want to fix or set them as you want

If you want to conserve your first pose, Duplicate the file before doing any changes

"original

"unreal

Original DazStudio Pose UnrealEngine Modified Pose

Once you have done editing or setting up your new pose go to Create Asset>Create Animation>Current Pose

"how

"both

Export Cloth and Props separate from the Character

If you want interchangeable clothes for the Character, this is for you.

The first you need to do is to setup your character in Daz

Once you have your character, select each prop you want to be changed(Clothes or Hair)

Select the prop and Export it as SkeletalMesh and import it to UE4

"single

Repeat this with each object you want to separate.

Remember to use the same Character, in this case Genesis3

Once you have everything in your project Now go to your blueprint or create a new one, add a main skeletal mesh for your character and new skeletal mesh for each Cloth slot

"assets

I’m working with the hair, now go to the construction Script and Call Set master pose component function, set the Hair and other cloths as target and the Mesh as master.

"constuctor

"short

Short Hair

"long

Long Hair

Made a copy of Daz Skeleton

Once you have completed every setup in DazStudio, i recommend you to clone your skeleton from the plugin folder, since a new update will override everything done to the Skeleton(Sockets, new bones, poses, etc…)

The way to do is, copy your skeletons from the plugin folder to a new one inside the content

"skeletal

If you want to do a backup copy, just copy your asset but, if you want these bones to be the main resource and not updated/replaced anymore, you can move it instead.

"copy

Remember, if you move the skeletons from the folder, you will find issues while working with the plugin in new projects. If you do, you must re-install the plugin.

Keep your Unreal Project opened while using DazToUnreal Bridge

This will make your import process much easier because Unreal will import automatically since the project is opened.

If for some reason you had your project closed and you did an export with DazToUnreal Bridge, you can go to the exported file folder and import the .dtu file to the Unreal Engine Project once it is opened.

Ignore geometry not in usage

This will work to save some efforts to your computer while working with these assets

First go to Tools>Geometry Editor

"tool

Select the mesh you want to hide, in my case i will hide my characters feets since she has Heels

Right Click>Selection Type>Polygon Selection

"polygon

Now Go to Selection Mode>Lasso or Marquee Selection, i will use Lasso since is way easier to grab my selection

"selection

Then, Select and Drag the polygons inside the boot, once you have them go to Tools Settings(Window>Tools Settings) And scroll down till you get to Surfaces>RightClick>Create Surface From Selected

"create

Name it, the name must have a _NoDraw at the end

Now Export it and send it to Unreal Engine 4, i did this for test purposes just to show that it works.

I Can’t find the Daz To Unreal plugin in DazStudio

Make sure your character is compatible with DazToUnreal Plugin, You can check how to find out Here

This problem is caused by many reasons, one of them is the Unreal Engine Marketplace plugin.

You need to uninstall this plugin from the UE4 marketplace first this plugin may give some conflicts with the DazToUnreal Bridge one, then try reinstalling the Daz to Unreal plugin

Another reason for this problem is the bad installation of the plugin, you need to first install UE4 before installing the DazToUnreal Plugin

Sometimes the plugin will appear on the Edit tab instead of File
